I like to read. The process of reading and thinking about what I read seems to be as free as I get, once we connect, the book and I.
It's like me and the book leave town ostensibly, no calls please just leave us alone.
I save the books I really like. Anything else I give away after I read it..
I learned a couple of things from some Scientologist friends of mine. In their "religion" as a part of it anyway, they learn not to go past words you read that you don't understand. If you do, and I've tried this, you will not retain the literature properly, your reading enjoyment goes way down and you will probably put the book down because you no longer understand what you are reading. See if it happens to you next time you read something, go right by the word you can't feature and see if ol' Elron was right or not for yourself..It's one of those sneaky tip toe deals, if you aren't paying attention it sneaks right by you, leaving you with the belief you "read" the book.
.
Sometimes, movies have the same effect on me. I watch movies I like again and again. Documentaries like Stacy Peraltas "Dogtown and Z Boys" to " Nietzsche and the Nazis". The two "Hellboy" movies. "Drugstore Cowboy" or "Greasers Palace". The missed dialogue or scene in a film has the same effect on me as the missed word in a book.. If the film is really impressive, like Tarantinos"Pulp Fiction "or "True Romance" or Herzogs "Nosferatu The Vampire." (I swear on my old dogs bones that Klaus Kinsski is the most frightening thing I've seen to date, with the little devil girl in "The Exorcist" a close second).
I get more of the subtle dialogue, I start looking at filters, lenses, angles, neg cutting, seams in the scenes so you can tell the changes in editing, different hair, guns and jewelry My old friend and roommate used to get me to go to the show with him and he'd explain shit to me. We really enjoyed the Russ Meyers features because we were in our mid twenties..
Often I enjoy films more the second or third time I watch, even beyond that as I get deeper into the movie.
Besides the story and the acting, I like the technology they use. In films, I mean. All of it, the right now absolutely new and the classy old grainy ones, too. I am fascinated by the industrial process these guys go through to get it down.
Since we are fairly civilized we have a few VHS and DVD players set up around here., high def blue ray on demand MLB Network weather channel c span flow from our digital machinery to the audio end units. Due to this incredible technology I am able to stop and think about what I just saw or heard or thought I had.
The dogs( we have one new one and babysit another one) don't care about films unless some movie dog makes noise. Unless they do it when we're sleeping, I don't think they care about the books. We get the RCA Dog syndrome from one of them, cocks her head and wiggles her ears, stares at the speaker while the other one goes nuts, hits the yard in a fury ,foaming and barking, she finally stops and looks around like "what the fuck?" then she has to sniff around the whole place to see if she has been hornswoggled and if so, by what.Oh yeah, doorbells ringing or door knocking in the movies audio will bring on a frothing paroxicism that cannot be controlled by anything. It takes a few minutes to calm down, but there are still low throat growling presentations and restless pacing often accompanied by small whimpers and whining..
Although the manifestations of the syndrome vary, it is a universal truth that dogs are crazy.
I like to think I emulate the peaceful listening dog, not the wild ass howler the other one is.
I put on "Meddle" by the esteemed Pink Floyd and que up "Seamus"...if you haven't tried that on your dog yet, wait until you need a good laugh and then put it on.
If you were caught in Sandy and got messed up, my sympathies.... Lets make sure the feds REALLY get in there and act like a government not a bad circus or a rigged casino. I will do all I can to help. I have been volunteering for Habitat For Humanity and I bet they'll be ready to help as well.
Take care of yourselves.
I wish all a happy and productive all hallows eve.
I'll try out that Floyd song on my dog in the near future.
