I have friends that have lived lives I would have never made it through. All this talk about Mayans has stirred my memories.
These guys, my friends, are of Mayan descent yet were raised in San Ysidro and I think up here somewhere, too. I never heard much about that. They may or may not of heard about their cultural heritage while they were kids, I don't know that either. The good thing is they learned about it sometime and when they wanted to live like men, they chose to live by it.
The fucking thieving rapist murderer diseased Spaniards that decimated the Mayan Culture were really lucky they didn't have to try to decimate these guys.
I'd be in trouble for saying their names out loud, maybe. They could send some Brujo over here to make all my teeth turn to pineapples and my ears fall off. Or even worse, get mad at me and come over and get me themselves. They got together and began a thing here called "The Latino Commision." It's a good thing. A really good one.
They find other Mayan or Aztec descendants in trouble and teach them the Mayan code. They consider them all to be lost brothers or sisters. Also, they live by it themselves, the code, and they teach it to their kids. They help women too, but knowledgeable women do that part, mainly, so there's no confusion. They aren't reformers, they don't really hunt for people, people come to them.
The guys that don't know whats what, they teach them. Men don't hit women or children, they take care of their family, they take responsibility for themselves. Spending time in prison or involved in nefarious activity is out, knowing your cultural heritage and language is in, stay calm, help the poor. Control yourself and here's how you do it.
Too bad they weren't running this place, America. We'd be better off all around, all of us.
